A long-running tradition at Abbey Gate College has been the opportunity for our Year 8 students to partake in a BBC School Report Day with the English Department. This year, it took place on Wednesday 19th April, and all of Year 8 were off timetable to investigate a local or global issue and learn what it is like to be a journalist.
Joined by Michaela Howard from the BBC (parent of Dylan W, L6th), Year 8 started their day with question they wanted to explore and then went out in College to investigate what our community thought of their issue. Some of the favourite local topics were homework and uniform, whilst some students focused on bigger issues like ChatGPT, immigration, abortion, contemporary art, and VAR (Video Assistance Referee).
9 students were awarded a commendation from Michaela Howard and Miss Donarski for their fantastic journalistic skills and final pieces. Those students were: Fabian V., Ewan D., Bodie R., Sam S., Amelia R., Amelie D., Charlotte L., Eve F., and Matilda S. – Congratulations!
The day is a fantastic way to remind students of the power of language, the importance of literacy, and the excitement of being curious.
