College Year 10 Footballers in Thrilling Cheshire Cup Win
Published on 12th October 2023
AGC 6-6 Ellesmere Port
AGC win 5-4 in penalties
Yesterday’s Cheshire Cup match played at home against Ellesmere Port Catholic High was an example of football at its very best. Despite torrential rains, both sides dug deep to overcome the conditions.
Match report from Mr Cutler
The home side were 3-0 down after 15 minutes despite dominating play, but a determined fight back saw our College squad draw level with an own goal, both Charlie C and Harry S scoring. Another bullet free kick left EPCH 4-3 up at half time.
As Louis W drove the midfield forward, the College were soon in the ascendancy as Harry S drew the College level and then Louis W powered in a close range header. Credit to the opposition who again levelled.
With 2 minutes left Thomas P bundled home what appeared the winner from a corner amid mass scenes of celebration. Hopes were dashed and tension rose as Ellesmere Port were awarded a penalty to equalise with the final kick of the game.
Penalties ensued with Jeremy F in goal the hero saving a penalty in a 5-4 shoot out.
Great team performance and a master class in managing the game from manager Mr Darbey.
