Thanks for the Memories! Our Senior Rugby 7s Play One Last Time…
Published on 12th March 2024
Last week our Senior Rugby Squad pulled on the green and gold hoops one last time as they made the short journey to Lymm RFC to take part in the Cheshire Schools RFU Rugby Sevens.
Throughout their time at the College, the boys have been an absolute credit. Despite being heavily affected by the pandemic and losing several players along the way, there have been some huge achievements for a school of our modest size.
Some of the Senior team will remember a Rugby tour to Leeds in J5 and an impromptu snowball fight on Saddleworth Moor, whilst most will remember the victory in Year 9 against Bishop Heber in which they played their hearts out, executed the game plan to a tee and came from behind more than once to secure a memorable victory. This was followed up by an appearance in the Cheshire Schools RFU County Plate final where they once again met Bishop Heber, unfortunately they could not repeat their earlier endeavours but hopefully that night, playing under the floodlights in a County Cup Final will live long in their memories.
Back to more recent endeavours and the Senior Sevens, the boys were up against schools several times our size, a fair few academy level players and it was clear early on that we were in good company. Throughout the course of the day the boys played with honesty, effort, positivity and teamwork, values that had been the cornerstone of their Rugby at the College. As underdogs, they lived up to their billing and rattled the cages of some outstanding Rugby Schools, showing once again that here at Abbey Gate College we punch well above our weight. The Rugby they played was fantastic, individually and collectively and as teachers we watched on with pride.
Thanks for the memories!
