On 20 June the Year 9 and 10 Chester & District Athletics Championships were held at Deeside Athletics Stadium. Abbey Gate College pupils competed in great spirit and some fantastic results were gained.
The morning got off to an excellent start with Iyla Gallacher winning her hurdles heat. Due to weather conditions it was decided to do timed heats to decide the final placings. Iyla ranked 2nd overall, just being pipped to the post by less than 1 second. In the boys hurdles, Harry Green lead throughout to storm home 10 metres clear. In the Year 10 race, Matty Bailey demonstrated his excellent technique and won his event by at least 20 metres.
In the Year 9 Girls 100m heats, Keira Meadows ran a fantastic heat and finished 1st. The final saw a photo finish, which caused much debate amongst the place judges. It was finally decided that Keira placed 3rd, a great achievement. In the Year 10 100m final, Amy Key finished 3rd and Amy Clayton was 5th.
On the track, the boys’ started well with Cooper St. John, Year 9 leading until he unfortunately fell, but he made up for this with a great run in the relay team, who were narrowly beaten to finish 2nd. In Year 10, William Ashfield ran a dominant 1500m to win by a great distance. The Year 10 boys relay team finished in a very respectable 3rd place in the final.
The field events also saw some excellent results for Abbey Gate College with Chloe Le Ballois 1st in the Javelin, Seth Harriman finishing 2nd in the Shot Putt, Ben Mason 2nd in the Discus, Callum Potter 2nd in the High Jump, Iyla Gallacher 3rd in the Long Jump, James Lanni 4th in the Triple Jump and Matty Bailey 5th in the Javelin.
The Year 9 boys finished 6th overall and the Year 10 boys a competitive 3rd out of 10 schools. Well done to all of our competitors and good luck to those who will qualify to represent Chester at the county finals.
