English Schools’ Ski Association Dry Slope Championships 2017

On Sunday 17th September, four teams from Abbey Gate College took part in the North-West qualifying race at Pendle in Lancashire. Following an uncharacteristic misjudgement from one of the older boys, the U14 Girls team was our fastest team on the day and qualified for the National Age Group Finals, which took place at Norwich on Saturday 7th October and there was tough competition from schools in the South.

Our U14 girls team who are Keira Meadows, Lauren Hopkins (in her second ever ski race), Lucy Randle and Phoebe Gartside skied brilliantly, and came home in a very credible 5th place. Keira had an especially good race and was the 8th fastest girl in the age category and Lucy was 10th. Congratulations to Lucy Randle, Lauren Hopkins and Keira Meadows.

The Under 16 boys team came second in their category at Pendle but were unfortunately not fast enough to qualify, although Matthew Broderick-Jones and Matthew Morris were 4th and 5th in the age category.

The Under 19 girls team came 4th in their age category and Gabby Parker, Mary Goodridge and Daisy Baker were 10th, 11th and 12th in the age category.

On Sunday 8th October the boys team had another chance to prove themselves, which they certainly did. There was an Open Age Group Final at Norwich. The team score is made up of the fastest 3 runs scored by a team on each of two runs.  There were only three racers on the Abbey Gate College boys team instead of 4, so they all had to ski and finish the course correctly which put the pressure on.

As first racer, and usually fastest, Ewan made a minor mistake on the first run but kept his balance due to sheer skill and athleticism. James Thompson and Toby Goodridge skied fast and smoothly and clocked up 2 solid times in the middle of the field. In the second run, Ewan excelled and scored the 2nd fastest time of the day, again followed by 2 solid times from James and Toby. This meant that the team finished in 7th place on the day and have qualified for the British Finals in November.

Ewan just missed out on an individual medal. He was 4th fastest boy and has achieved the honour of being the highest placed skier from Abbey Gate College in the sixteen years we have taken part in these National Championships.

Congratulations and certificates to Ewan, James and Toby.
