College 1st XV Rugby Squad in Spirited Match Against Stockport Grammar
Published on 1st December 2022
Yesterday, November 30th, our fresh 1st XV Rugby Team battled gallantly in a match away to Stockport Grammar.
Mr Rowett has provided the following match report:
“Our heavily depleted 1st XV Rugby squad made the journey to face Stockport Grammar School this week in what was their first game at Senior level.
Our boys, made up of mainly of Year 12 players with one Year 13 lined up against a strong home team which included some fantastic players.
The game was played in great spirit and our boys gave a hugely impressive account of themselves.
The Abbey Gate team started brightly with some hard tackling and strong running, as the game ebbed and flowed our squad did well to stay within striking distance of the Home team as they grew into the game and began to hit their stride.
With 15 minutes remaining the College team were still in the arm wrestle but ultimately Stockport’s fitness combined with some astute tactical play saw them dominate the latter stages of the game to run out convincing winners.
A huge thank you must go to Mr Corbett and the staff and pupils at Stockport Grammar School for hosting us.”
