Eswatini Service Project
A Decade of Partnership: Abbey Gate College and the Mlindzini Community

Since 2013, we have maintained an ongoing relationship with the Mlindzini Community in remote Eswatini (formally known as Swaziland) Visits by groups of students in Years 11-13, plus staff volunteers, have been made on a bi-annual basis to provide them with opportunities to experience a different culture, to undertake construction work to improve faciliteis and to help improve educational opportunties for the Eswatini pupils, as well as conservation work.

Ten years is a significant milestone in any relationship, but when that relationship is between an independent school set in leafy grounds in the heart of the United Kingdom and a remote community in the distant mountains of Eswatini, the impact is profound. Abbey Gate College’s partnership with Mlindzini is a testament to the power of human connection and the transformative potential of education.

When this collaboration began in 2013, it was a bold step. To bridge the vast geographical and socio-economic divide between the two communities was an ambitious undertaking. Yet, a decade on, it is evident that the partnership has not only endured but flourished, becoming a beacon of hope and progress.

Over the years, four student expeditions have ventured to Eswatini, the most recent in July 2024. These expeditions, facilitated by expedition travel specialists, Sense Earth,  provide invaluable experiences for Abbey Gate College students, offering them the opportunity to experience a culture very different from their own while developing their leadership and team-working skills. Through these trips, students have not only made a positive impact on the community but have also learned invaluable lessons about global citizenship and social responsibility.

Fundraising has been a key component of these expeditions, with the entire Abbey Gate College community participating in events such as race nights, quiz nights, bake sales, and other events. The funds raised have supported various projects in Mlindzini, including road improvements, the construction of a bridge, and the building of new kitchen blocks for the schools. These projects have made a significant difference in the daily lives of students and teachers, improving access to education and ensuring that basic needs, such as meals, are met.

However, this partnership is more than just bricks and mortar. It is about people connecting with people. The exchange of cultures, ideas, and perspectives has enriched both communities. Abbey Gate College students have gained a profound appreciation for the challenges faced by their peers in Mlindzini, while the community has embraced new opportunities and aspirations.

This decade-long collaboration is a powerful reminder of the interconnectedness of our world. It demonstrates that even the smallest actions can have a ripple effect. By investing in the education and well-being of the Mlindzini community, Abbey Gate College has not only fulfilled its social responsibility but has also created a legacy of hope and inspiration.

One of the most significant achievements of this collaboration has been the increase in school attendance and retention rates in Mlindzini. Previously, many children in the community did not attend school regularly due to a lack of facilities and resources. Now, with the support of Abbey Gate College, not only do more children attend school, but they also stay longer, with a noticeable increase in the number of students progressing to higher education

Staff members from the schools in the community have commented on this enduring relationship; “Abbey Gate College has been a true partner in every sense of the word. They have not only provided us with resources but have also stood with us, shared our challenges, and celebrated our successes. We are forever grateful for their friendship and support.” “We run short of words to express our sincere gratitude for the donations.  Pass our great thankfulness to…everyone who has played a part.”

As the partnership enters its second decade, it is essential to acknowledge that challenges remain. Poverty, inequality, and climate change continue to impact the lives of people in Mlindzini. However, the foundation laid over the past ten years provides a solid platform for addressing these issues. By building upon the successes of the partnership and adapting to the changing needs of the community, Abbey Gate College and Mlindzini can continue to create a brighter future together.

This partnership is a model for others to emulate. It is a testament to the belief that education is a fundamental human right and that collaboration can overcome even the most daunting obstacles. As we celebrate this milestone, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of compassion, empathy, and shared humanity that have underpinned this extraordinary journey.

Craig Jenkinson, Head of Abbey Gate College says of the College’s Eswatini Service Project; ‘The world needs more partnerships like this. It is a beacon of hope in a world often marked by division and inequality, Abbey Gate College and community of Mlindzini have shown us that together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.’

The preparation for the next expedition, in July 2026, is already underway, with a new team of students already signed up (more than ever before!) and starting the training, preparation and fundraising for their adventure of a lifetime.
