On 7 November, Abbey Gate College was the host for the ISA North Tournament as 7 teams and 21 matches were played across 3 pitches on an entertaining afternoon. The College started well as James Buchanan scored two fantastic goals to beat Queen Ethelburga’s in the first game. The defence all made valuable contributions throughout with Seb Middleton outstanding and Tristan Brady in goal only letting in 3 goals across all six games.
The whole team made valid contributions as Javier Sanz Perez won the Tower College game with a thunderbolt finish from the edge of the area for a narrow 1-0 win. Real character was required after going a goal down to Hulme Hall and the best passing move of the day saw the equalising goal with James Buchanan tap ping the bell in at the far post. With a win vital Luca Villano twisted and turned in the box to smash the winner into the roof of the net for a narrow 2-1 win.
Only Bridgewater School were able to match our attacking prowess and a 2-2 draw and 2 points for a score draw was a fair result over 12 evenly contested minutes.
As weary legs and minor injuries took their toll all 11 squad members were required in the final game as a slender lead was established against Huddersfield Grammar. Rather fittingly a quality goal from the left foot of David Mitchell for an exquisite far post volley sealed the tournament win.
After 6 games and 5 wins and a score draw, the final 17 points left the College 3 points clear of any other school to deservedly be crowned ISA North Under 16 champions. Well done all!
