Students Complete Brecon Gold Assessed Duke of Edinburgh's Award

As the six Lower Sixth students set off in low cloud and drizzle on Friday for their 4 day trek, the elements did not appear to favour an incident free route. However, the boys were impeccably well prepared and after a Youth Hostel preparation evening where all food was meticulously packaged the group set off for the first 15 kilometres of hill walking.

Despite difficult navigation in 30 metres of visibility, the boys walked into camp in Glyntaw a little wet but in good spirits. Day 2 saw lots of sunshine and out came the high factor sun cream. A steady 13 kilometres and a relaxing wild camp was followed on day 3 with camp below the big summit of Pen y Fan at 886 metres.

The boys then set off on the final day with the thoughts of a Llanfaes ice cream in Brecon at the finish point to motivate them. The boys proved to be a strong and resourceful and highly cohesive unit throughout the Assessed Expedition and impressed the Mountain Leaders to pass with flying colours.
