Sporting Inspiration and Former Pupil Hosts Sport Awards Evening

The second annual Sport Awards Evening saw Abbey Gate College welcome back former pupil Alex Schwarz as guest speaker. Alex now plays professional Rugby Union with RGC in North Wales. Alex spent the afternoon speaking to all our award winners, as well as running a rugby session out on the pitches prior to providing an insight into the elite training methods in his evening address to over 150 parents.

The Sport Award evening saw 108 different awards across all sports and also acknowledged awards for “Excellence” outside of normal schools sports as well as “Elite Excellence” for those competing at county and national level.

The awards were a testament to the ability and mindset of the pupils and students to have the motivation and desire to challenge themselves, with the backing of strong parental support and aided by the ongoing provision at the College for high quality facilities and support from our own PE staff. The anniversary of the opening of our Sports Pavilion is now closely followed by the all-weather pitch development commencing over the summer and due for completion by November half term as the College continues to develop talent.

The main awards on the evening  for “Overall Contribution to School Sport” were won by Alexander Stewart and Keira Meadows in Year 7, Matty Bailey and Ffion Schofield in Year 8, Jack Tomlins and Annabel Smith in Year 9 and Seb Middleton and Amelia Percival in Year 10.

The other main awards won were “Team of the Year” to our highly successful Y7 Football 7 and 5 a side team and “Coaches of the Year” to Lower Sixth pupils Wilf Smith and Dan Roberts.

Well done to all the pupils and a special thanks to Alex for his inspirational talk and work throughout the day with pupils.
