An amazing performance by a severely depleted Under 16 team produced a well disciplined display full of total commitment. After success earlier in the week, winning the U16 ISA North tournament, no less than 4 of the squad were either injured or unavailable for the Saturday afternoon trip to Shrewsbury School so we were definitely facing a challenge!
A change of formation saw George Ridings in a holding midfield position and James Buchanan as the lone striker. A solid defensive display with Will Borders as a Y10 pupil playing against older players solid and reliable and another Y10 Tom Hettwer running himself to a standstill as well as displaying some slick balls skills. The defence of Charlie Fleet, Seb Middleton and Scott Nelson were determined and strong in everything they did.
The midfield trickery of Baden Hocking and Luca Villano constantly offered opportunities in attack for the ever willing runs of Cai Wilson and James Buchanan. The last line of defence with David Mitchell in goal in reliable form catching all crosses and shots confidently made the College impossible to break down in the first half. Half time 0-0.
The second half saw a resolute defensive display until Seb Middleton made a defensive interception and strode forward purposefully to hit a speculative 35 yard shot that slipped out of the goalkeepers grasp and spun over the line for the opening goal on 55 minutes. Five minutes later Seb surpassed this with a 40 yard lob into the roof of the net for a two goal lead. Shrewsbury then pressed and reduced the arrears to 2-1 with 4 minutes left but the College held on to the lead for a truly deserved win.
